Grand Cultural Event in Sydney Marks 100th Anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev
On December 20, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in collaboration with Azerbaijani Associations in Australia, organized a significant national cultural heritage concert in Castle Hill, Sydney. This event was a key part of the year-long commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev (May 10, 1923 – December 12, 2003).
Leaders of the Azerbaijani associations, alongside other prominent community figures, warmly welcomed guests to the Pioneer Theater in Castle Hill.
The program commenced with the rendition of the national anthems of Australia and Azerbaijan, symbolizing the strong bond and mutual respect between the two nations. His Excellency Mr. Vagif Jafarov, Chargé d’Affaires of the Azerbaijani Mission in Australia, then delivered a compelling speech. He highlighted the profound contributions of National Leader Heydar Aliyev to Azerbaijan, particularly his pivotal role in strengthening the nation's independence, proclaimed on August 30, 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The event was graced by the presence of His Excellency Mr. Ali Sevim, Consul General of Turkey, and his spouse, who attended as the Guests of Honor. Other distinguished community leaders were also among the attendees.
The cultural highlight of the evening was a captivating performance by the renowned Karabakh Mugham Group. Mugham, a highly complex and revered Azerbaijani classical art form, seamlessly blends classical poetry with intricate musical compositions based on specific local modes. The enthusiastic audience, comprising members of the Azerbaijani diaspora and invited guests, filled the theater, cheering and singing along with the group, demonstrating deep appreciation for this unique cultural expression.
The program proved to be a resounding success, not only for the Azerbaijani diaspora in Sydney but also for a broader audience, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Azerbaijan's rich culture and arts. The celebration of Heydar Aliyev's 100th anniversary at this event also included a photo exhibition, the concert itself, and a special screening of the film "Winners Live Forever," enriching the commemorative experience.
