Information on establishing bilateral relations:
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and New Zealand were established on September 10, 1992. On December 23, 2013, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the appointment of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Australian Union, R. Jamshidov, at the same time as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to New Zealand.
Contract-legal basis of bilateral relations:
There is no bilateral agreement between the parties.
Major high-level visits and meetings:
On August 26, 2014, R. Jamshidov, who was on a visit to New Zealand, presented his credentials to the Governor General of New Zealand, Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae.
Within the framework of the visit, Ambassador R. Jamshidov also had meetings with Mr. Ian Hill, the head of the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand, Mrs. Caroline Bilkey, the head of the protocol department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand, and Mr. Bede Corry, the deputy minister.
During the meetings, it was noted that there is potential for establishing closer relations between our countries and ministries, and for establishing cooperation relations in the field of energy, agriculture and education.
On April 8, 2011, a working group on interparliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and New Zealand was established in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The head of the working group is Chingiz Ashrali oghlu Ganizadeh, its members are Aslan Mammadhuseyn oghlu Jafarov, Asabil Garakishi oghlu Gasimov, Ulvi Zahid oghlu Guliyev, Aydin Buyukkishi oghlu Mirzazadeh, Tahir Musa oghlu Rzayev and Aghalar Israfil oghlu Valiyev.

Economic cooperation
In January-March 2015, the trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan with New Zealand, including imports, amounted to 5.52 mln. It was US dollars. In January-March 2015, the share of New Zealand in the foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan was 0.09 percent. Compared to the corresponding period of 2014, trade turnover with New Zealand increased by 36.56 percent in January-March 2015.
Agricultural products are mainly exported from New Zealand to Azerbaijan, and a small amount of consumer food products are exported from Azerbaijan to this country.
