COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev Visits Sydney Institute of Marine Science

Mukhtar Babayev, the President-Designate of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, recently visited the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) in New South Wales, Australia. As part of his study tour focused on climate change issues, Babayev explored the institute’s pioneering work on the effects of climate change and urbanization on marine ecosystems.

Founded in 2005 and located on Chowder Bay in Sydney Harbour, SIMS is a collaborative effort between Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, and the University of Technology Sydney. It stands as a leading marine research facility, housing over 100 scientists and graduate students who are at the forefront of marine science. The institute’s research addresses critical areas such as sea-level fluctuations, habitat restoration, ocean resources and technologies, and the effectiveness of marine management strategies.

Babayev’s visit to SIMS highlights the vital role of marine research in the global fight against climate change. The insights gained from such research are crucial for shaping effective policies and actions in the lead-up to COP29 and beyond.
